Herberton's History Books
Herberton — The Town Of The Pioneers
Herberton — The Town Of The Pioneers is the 38th book by Glenville Pike (O.A.M., FRGSA, F.R. Hist.S.Q). Glenville was commissioned to write the book by Craig and Connie Kimberley to preserve the town's history.
The 80 page book, which features 46 duo-tone photographs from 1880 onwards, traces the development of Herberton from its founding in the 1880's to the present day.
Well-known identities of the early years such as John Newell (recognised as the founder of Herberton) , Willie Jack, John Atherton, John Moffat, and Christie Palmerston, among many others, been recognised for their vast contribution to this town.
Inhabitants of the area who, in the past, may not have been so well publicised such as horsemen and women, native police, pathfinders, hotel keepers and other business owners, are documented in this book along with railway construction gangs, religious leaders and more recent mining identities.
Personal anecdotes are included along with reference to the men and women of the district who were quick to heed the 'call to arms' during the first and second World Wars. How the children of the pioneers reacted to the harsh life of the 1880's has not been forgotten in this very readable publication.
Spreading over the back and front covers of "Town of the Pioneers" is an historic photograph taken in 1932 which records the outpouring of grief that followed the passing of John Newell as his horse-drawn cortege, followed by cars of the era, passed along Herberton's main street.
